In the world today it seems everyone knows what ecommerce is, the ability to conduct monetary transactions over the internet.  

I have been working with Karen's Ceramics to build her site since 2005.  It is a fully enabled   ecommerce site.  If you have been around to see it grow, I'm sure you're amazed at the difference.  It has been a growing experience for both of us.  We have learned and developed with the time.  Just a note . . . this site was totally developed by powerplaymmp, not with the aid of an actual shopping chart program.

With that said . . . if you are considering incorporating this aspect into your site, you need to 

MAKE A PLAN

Hosting
Having a hosting company that provides a reliable, secure, easy  and powerful environment within which to establish your on-line business a primary consideration.  

Personally, for in the beginning, I prefer starting your site on a hosting system that cost NOTHING.  After you developing a professional looking site that meets your expectations, it can be moved to one that offers all the aspects of security that you will need.  

Products/Service
You need to decide on exactly what you plan to sell online.  You'll need pictures, descriptions, and price you will charge your customers.
 
Processing Transactions 
Merchant account - if you already have off-line credit card processing, is a plus.  But truthfully, for one who is just starting out this can be expense.  You can expect to pay a monthly fee just to have a merchant account, with the possibility of making a sale.

Paypal - no need for merchant account, cost covered by per transaction fee.
